A freelance digital marketer in Ghana typically charges a small business GHS 500 to GHS 1,000 per month. With 10 to 20 clients, most beginners earn roughly GHS 5,000 to GHS 10,000 a month. An experienced specialist — someone with deep Facebook and Instagram ads skill, handling bigger clients at GHS 2,500 to GHS 5,000 each — commonly earns GHS 20,000 to GHS 40,000 a month.
The honest headline is that there is no fixed pay. A digital marketer’s income is simply two numbers multiplied together: how many clients you have, and how much each one pays. Change either and your month changes. This guide shows every combination so you can see exactly where you would land — and what moves you from one row to the next.
Where these figures come from: they are what we see among the people we train and the marketers we work alongside in Ghana, not a national salary survey. Treat them as realistic ranges, not promises.
How digital marketers in Ghana actually get paid
Most digital marketers here are not paid a salary. They work for several businesses at once and charge each one a monthly management fee — for setting up and running their ads, managing their pages, reporting results and adjusting what is not working.
One point confuses almost every beginner, so settle it now: the fee is separate from the client’s ad budget. If a boutique pays you GHS 800 a month and spends GHS 1,500 on Facebook ads, the GHS 1,500 goes to Meta. Your income is the GHS 800. Never quote a fee that silently includes the ad spend — you will end up paying for the client’s ads out of your own pocket.
Beginner earnings: GHS 500–1,000 per client
A beginner typically works with small businesses — shops, boutiques, food vendors, salons, local service businesses — and charges GHS 500 to GHS 1,000 a month per client. Here is what that looks like at different client counts:
| Clients per month | At GHS 500 each | At GHS 750 each | At GHS 1,000 each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 clients | GHS 2,500 | GHS 3,750 | GHS 5,000 |
| 10 clients | GHS 5,000 | GHS 7,500 | GHS 10,000 |
| 15 clients | GHS 7,500 | GHS 11,250 | GHS 15,000 |
| 20 clients | GHS 10,000 | GHS 15,000 | GHS 20,000 |
Most beginners who build a steady client base settle somewhere between GHS 5,000 and GHS 10,000 a month — ten clients at the lower fee, or ten at the higher fee, or twenty small ones.
Two honest notes on this table. The five-client row is where nearly everyone starts, and getting from five to ten usually takes several months of good work and referrals. And the bottom-right corner — twenty clients at GHS 1,000 — is possible but uncommon for a beginner, because twenty clients is a great deal of work for one person. Most people reach a limit on how many businesses they can serve well long before twenty.
Expert earnings: GHS 2,500–5,000 per client
The jump in income does not come from taking on more clients. It comes from charging each client more, which you can only do once you can deliver more.
An advanced digital marketer — one who genuinely understands Facebook and Instagram ads in depth: tracking with the pixel and Conversions API, retargeting, testing, scaling, and fixing accounts when Meta restricts them — works with bigger businesses that have real advertising budgets. Those clients pay GHS 2,500 to GHS 5,000 a month each, because a good marketer handling their budget is worth far more than that to them.
| Bigger clients | At GHS 2,500 each | At GHS 3,500 each | At GHS 5,000 each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 clients | GHS 10,000 | GHS 14,000 | GHS 20,000 |
| 6 clients | GHS 15,000 | GHS 21,000 | GHS 30,000 |
| 8 clients | GHS 20,000 | GHS 28,000 | GHS 40,000 |
| 10 clients | GHS 25,000 | GHS 35,000 | GHS 50,000 |
And experts rarely drop their small clients entirely. A realistic month often looks like this:
- Example A: 10 bigger clients at GHS 2,500 (GHS 25,000) plus 5 small clients at GHS 1,000 (GHS 5,000) = GHS 30,000 a month
- Example B: 6 bigger clients at GHS 5,000 (GHS 30,000) plus 4 small clients at GHS 1,000 (GHS 4,000) = GHS 34,000 a month
- Example C: 8 bigger clients at GHS 2,500 (GHS 20,000) and nothing else = GHS 20,000 a month
That is why we put a typical expert in the GHS 20,000 to GHS 40,000 range. Ten premium clients at GHS 5,000 — the GHS 50,000 corner — does happen, but it is the exception, and at that level most people are running a small team rather than doing everything alone.
Beginner vs expert at a glance
| Beginner | Expert | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical clients | Small businesses, shops, local services | Established businesses with real ad budgets |
| Fee per client | GHS 500–1,000 a month | GHS 2,500–5,000 a month |
| Number of clients | 10–20 | About 10 bigger clients, plus some smaller ones |
| Typical monthly income | GHS 5,000–10,000 | GHS 20,000–40,000 |
What moves you from beginner to expert pay
It is not years alone. It is a handful of specific abilities that bigger clients will pay for:
- Deep Facebook and Instagram ads skill. Not boosting posts — building campaigns with the right objective, installing the pixel and Conversions API, retargeting warm buyers, testing creative, and scaling what works.
- Results you can prove. A client paying GHS 5,000 wants to see what you did for someone else, in numbers. Your first case studies are worth more than any certificate.
- Keeping accounts alive. Businesses with real budgets live in fear of a restricted ad account. If you can prevent and fix those problems, you become very hard to replace.
- Clear reporting. Bigger clients pay for confidence. A simple monthly report showing spend, results and what you changed keeps them for years.
- Speed through AI. The marketers moving up fastest use AI tools to write ad copy, video scripts and page content in a fraction of the time — which lets them serve more clients without the quality dropping.
The costs nobody mentions
The figures above are what clients pay you, not what you keep. Budget honestly for:
- Data and internet — you will be online all day
- Tools — paid versions of Canva, CapCut or an AI assistant add up once you rely on them
- A working laptop and phone, and eventually replacing them
- Help — at expert level, many marketers pay an assistant or a video editor
- Quiet months — clients pause, close or move on. Freelance income goes up and down, so save in the good months
Freelance or employed?
Employed digital marketing roles in Ghana pay a steady salary rather than per client. Salary surveys such as Glassdoor’s report marketing salaries here from roughly GHS 1,400 to GHS 10,000 a month, with digital marketing specialists around GHS 3,000 to GHS 10,000, depending on the employer and experience.
So a job gives you stability, and freelancing gives you a higher ceiling with less certainty. Many people do both: a salaried role during the week and three or four clients of their own on the side, which is often the safest way to build towards full-time freelancing. How beginners actually get their first clients
- Start with people who already know you. Almost every first client is a friend’s business, a relative’s shop or a church member’s service.
- Look around you. Every business near you with a neglected Facebook page or no ads is a potential client.
- Get one result, then show it. One business you helped — with real numbers — opens more doors than any amount of posting about yourself.
- Do not undercharge to win. Charging GHS 200 attracts the clients who complain most and pay last. GHS 500 is a fair floor for proper monthly work.
- Ask for referrals. A happy client is the cheapest marketing you will ever have.
Frequently asked questions
How much are digital marketers paid in Ghana?
Freelance digital marketers typically charge GHS 500–1,000 per client per month as beginners, earning roughly GHS 5,000–10,000 a month with 10–20 clients. Experienced ads specialists charge GHS 2,500–5,000 per client and commonly earn GHS 20,000–40,000 a month. Salaried roles range roughly from GHS 3,000 to GHS 10,000 a month for specialists.
How much should I charge a client as a beginner?
GHS 500 to GHS 1,000 a month for managing a small business’s ads and pages is a fair starting range. Agree in writing what that covers — which platforms, how many campaigns, and how often you report.
Is the client’s ad budget part of my fee?
No. The ad budget is paid to Meta, Google or TikTok. Your management fee is separate and is what you earn.
How long does it take to reach 10 clients?
For most people, several months after they start taking clients seriously. The first two or three are the hardest; after that, results and referrals do much of the work.
Can I do this part-time alongside a job?
Yes, and many people start exactly that way — three or four clients handled in the evenings and at weekends while keeping a salary.
Why do some digital marketers earn so much more than others?
Because income is fee multiplied by clients, and fee depends on skill and proof. Marketers who can run advanced Facebook and Instagram campaigns, show results and keep ad accounts healthy can charge five times what a beginner charges.
