What Do You Learn in a Digital Marketing Course?

A digital marketing course teaches you how to get customers online and prove it worked. In practice that means paid advertising on Facebook, Instagram, Google, YouTube and TikTok; search engine optimisation; content and ad copywriting; email and WhatsApp marketing; analytics and reporting; and increasingly, AI tools. A good course finishes with you running a real campaign, not just being told about one.

There is a second question hiding inside this one, and people usually mean one or the other: what subjects do I need before I can enrol? Both are answered below — and the honest answer to the second one surprises most people.

Do you need particular subjects to study digital marketing?

For a practical course in Ghana: no. No WASSCE subject combination, no prior marketing background, no degree. Our own course starts from zero, and most of the 6,000+ people we have trained had no marketing background at all. What you actually need is a laptop, a smartphone and the discipline to turn up.

You may have read otherwise. Search this question and you will find answers listing Marketing Principles, Business Studies, Mathematics or Statistics, English and Consumer Psychology as required subjects — often from South African or overseas colleges. Those are entry requirements for an academic diploma or degree, not for practical training. They are correct for what they describe, and irrelevant if what you want is to run campaigns.

The distinction matters:

  • A university programme — such as UPSA’s Master of Arts in Digital and Strategic Marketing Management, or GCTU’s MSc — has real academic entry requirements, usually a first degree.
  • A professional certificate or short course — the standard route in Ghana — has none. You enrol, you attend, you do the work.

If it helps you to know: comfort with basic numbers is genuinely useful, because you will read cost-per-result and conversion rates every day. But that is arithmetic, not statistics, and the course teaches it as you go.

What you actually learn, module by module

Below is the real structure of our 12-week Professional Certificate — 24 sessions. Programmes differ, but a serious one will cover roughly this ground, and if a course is missing several of these areas it is worth asking why.

1. Foundations and strategy

How businesses actually grow online, the customer journey, choosing the right channel for what you sell, and setting up your business pages and profiles properly. This week exists to stop the most common mistake: advertising on a platform your buyers are not on.

2. Content and creative that sells

Ad copywriting, hooks and offers, plus practical Canva and CapCut skills. Specifically: what makes a Ghanaian audience stop scrolling. Creative is the single biggest lever on advertising performance, and it is the part most courses treat as an afterthought.

3. Facebook and Instagram Ads

Three full weeks, because this is where most Ghanaian businesses spend and most of them waste it:

  • Ads Manager from zero — campaign objectives, and how to boost a post the right way
  • WhatsApp, message and call campaigns — the formats that actually generate enquiries here
  • Targeting that works in Ghana, custom and lookalike audiences
  • The Meta Pixel and Conversions API, standard events and custom conversions
  • Retargeting warm buyers, A/B testing, reading results in Ads Manager, and scaling what works

4. Google Ads and YouTube

How Search campaigns work, keyword intent and research, ad groups and quality score, local campaigns, conversion tracking, Display and YouTube, and bidding strategies that do not quietly waste your budget.

5. Search engine optimisation (SEO)

How Google ranks pages, keyword research, on-page SEO, writing content that ranks — and Google Business Profile and local SEO, which for a business with a physical location in Accra is often worth more than everything else combined.

6. TikTok ads and organic growth

When TikTok works and when it does not, TikTok Ads Manager, and the difference between organic reach and paid — a distinction that costs Ghanaian businesses real money when they get it wrong.

7. Email and WhatsApp marketing

Building a list you own rather than renting an audience from a platform, broadcasts and automation, and follow-up sequences that turn clicks into paying customers. In Ghana, WhatsApp is usually where the sale is actually closed.

8. AI tools and analytics

Using ChatGPT and other AI tools for ad copy, creative and research; Google Analytics 4 basics; and building a simple reporting dashboard so you can show what your marketing did.

9. A final project

Plan and launch a real campaign for a real business, sit the Google Ads and Meta certification exams, and take your work through a portfolio review. This is the part that makes the rest count.

The tools you will actually touch

A course that teaches concepts without tools leaves you unable to do the job on day one. Expect hands-on time in:

  • Meta Ads Manager and Meta Business Suite
  • Google Ads and Google Analytics 4
  • Google Business Profile
  • TikTok Ads Manager
  • Canva and CapCut for creative
  • ChatGPT and similar AI tools
  • An email marketing platform and WhatsApp Business

What you should be able to do at the end

This is the better test of a course than its topic list. After a proper professional certificate you should be able to:

  1. Set up a campaign from scratch with the right objective — not just boost a post
  2. Install and verify a Meta Pixel, and confirm events are actually firing
  3. Research keywords and build a Google Search campaign that targets buying intent
  4. Write ad copy and produce creative without waiting for a designer
  5. Read a report and say honestly whether the money worked
  6. Diagnose a campaign that is spending but not converting
  7. Rank a business locally on Google Maps
  8. Explain to a client or your boss what you did and why

If a course cannot tell you which of these you will be able to do, that is worth noticing before you pay.

What a digital marketing course does not teach you

Being straight about this saves disappointment:

  • It is not a graphic design or video production course. You will learn enough Canva and CapCut to produce good ads yourself, not to become a designer.
  • It is not a web development course. You will understand what a landing page needs; building sites properly is a separate bootcamp.
  • It does not hand you clients. It gives you a skill and a portfolio piece; finding the first client is still work, and usually starts with someone who already knows you.
  • It is not a guarantee of a job. Anyone promising that is selling, not teaching.

If you are choosing a degree instead

For an academic route, the subjects genuinely do matter, and they are the ones those overseas answers list: marketing principles, business studies and management, business communication, mathematics or statistics, and consumer behaviour. A degree gives you theory, a recognised qualification and a longer runway.

What it does not reliably give you is current platform skill, because platforms change faster than syllabuses do. We compared the two routes honestly — including what each one costs and what each one prepares you for — in university marketing programmes versus practical short courses.

Frequently asked questions

What subjects are needed to study digital marketing?

For a practical course or professional certificate in Ghana, none — there are no subject requirements and no prior experience needed. For a university degree or diploma, expect the usual academic entry requirements, with marketing, business studies, English and mathematics being the relevant background subjects.

What is taught in a digital marketing course?

Paid advertising (Facebook, Instagram, Google, YouTube, TikTok), SEO and local search, content and ad copywriting, email and WhatsApp marketing, analytics and reporting, AI tools, and a practical campaign project.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Nothing in a digital marketing course requires programming. You will install tracking code by copying and pasting it, which the course walks you through.

Do I need a laptop?

Strongly recommended — the ad platforms are far easier to work on than on a phone. If you do not have one yet, ask us; in-person students can use training machines when available.

Is digital marketing hard to learn?

The tools are not hard. The judgement is — knowing which campaign to run, for whom, with what offer. That is why practice on real campaigns matters more than the number of topics on a syllabus.

How long does it take to learn all this?

Most professional certificates in Ghana run 8 to 12 weeks. We break the timings down in how long a digital marketing course takes in Ghana.

The bottom line

A digital marketing course should leave you able to do things, not list things. The topic list above matters far less than whether you finish having run a real campaign with real money and read the result honestly.

When you compare courses, ask one question: what will I have actually built by the end? If the answer is only a certificate, keep looking.

Our 12-week Professional Certificate in Digital Marketing covers everything above across 24 sessions, weekday or weekend, in person in Accra or live online, for GHS 3,500 — finishing with a live campaign you plan and run yourself. If you only want one area, the two-week single-skill courses go deep on Facebook and Instagram Ads, Google Ads or SEO for GHS 1,500.
